    Play is where a child is most themselves — curious, motivated, willing to try. It gives us a natural place to meet them.

A look

Glancing at you, then at the thing they want. That's a sentence.

A gesture

Reaching, pointing, lifting arms, pushing something away.

Movement

Coming closer, leading you by the hand, bouncing with excitement.

A sound

A grunt, a squeal, a hum that shows up at the same moment every time.

A choice

Picking one cup over the other tells you something worth answering.

A reaction

Laughing, stilling, turning away — all of it is information.

Imitation

Copying your action or sound is an invitation to do it again.

A turn

Waiting, then going — the shape of conversation before conversation.
